Wooden Hot Tubs in the 1980's

In the early 80's it suffered a rapid decline. People outside the buisness claimed they leaked and the wood rotted and caused disease. Wooden tub manufacturers said that was just a ploy used to sell against them. But it was the growing convenience of the man-made shell spas that really wiped out the wooden tub trade. Back then, because the wooden tub had to be built into the ground, it would take two days to install. The portable plastice spas, a dealer could do four in one day. This as the real demise of the wooden hot tubs.

California Cooperage began operations. They improved hot tubs with liners, better plumbing and marketing. If you opened up Playboy in the 70's, there was their ad with a toll free # to order a hot tub kit to build in your backyard. Their tubs were very popular at resorts, and were considered quite chic.

Throughout the 70's wooden tubs held onto a hefty share of the market, and supported 15-20 manufacturers. At the time they were better known than fiberglass or acrylic and gained in popularity.

The Wooden Vats

1960’s-
The first wooden hot tubs began to appear in numbers in California. Inspired by the traditional Japanese bathing tubs, were made using leftover materials from nearby wineries of the region. They were sold to fun loving bohemians by fun loving bohemians. There were small ones, medium ones, and even giant ones with 20 to 30 people in them. Big and open with no seats or lounges, nothing in the way. It was just pure hot water enjoyment.
